Wolverines power past Xtreme
Posted: 8/17/2008
Winning on the road in MCFL is never easy. The Xtreme did their part to keep that tradition alive, at least on their defensive side of the ball. The vaunted Wolverine offense poked and prodded the entire first half before finally finding any cracks to exploit. Near the end of the second half Moonie Cunningham took the ball off tackle and scampered 28 yards off tackle for the lone score of the half. Despite scores by WR Shaun Boykins and FB AD Starks in the second half, the dominant story of the game had to be the Wolverine defense.
Missing 3 key contributors, the defense controlled the game from the opening snap. On the first play from scrimmage DE Brandon Ditto exploded through the Xtreme offensive line and nearly took the handoff. It only got better from there for the Ditto and the Wolverines. Ditto finished with 3.5 sacks and numerous pressures. DE Byron Tinker demonstrated array of moves on the way to the quarterback. The Xtreme rushing attack was thwarted by the defensive tackle tandem of AJ Lewis and Kyle Lowe.
The pivotal play of the game came on special teams this week. After the Xtreme defense forced the Wolverines to punt WR Derrick Ruffin beat his man off the line and met the punt returner a split second after his catch, causing and recovering the fumble to set up the Boykins TD catch.

Wolverines overcome slow start, corral Mustangs
Posted: 8/10/2008
The Hardin County Wolverines were still overcoming the after effects of last week's road loss in Columbus. The Indiana Mustangs came ready to play and took advantage early on. Playing with out their starting Quarterback Eric Hooks, the Mustangs were able to mount several drives in the first half two of which ended in long passes for scores.
The Wolverine defense ratcheted up the emotion in the 2nd half. Led by stellar play from the defensive line and a late Cody Eubanks interception, the Wolverines defense put the game in the hands of 3 long time offensive stars. Qb Ken Johnson continued his torrid pace, going 13 of 16 for the game. He found All-American WR Shaun Boykins for the winning score and tacked on an insurance score in the 4th quarter to FB Adrian Starks.

Wolverine Classic III raises $3,150
Posted: 7/27/2008
The Wolverine Family would like to thank Larue County High School and all the Larue County people who came out to cheer the Wolverines past the Kings Comets. The facilities were spectacular, the school staff was exceptional, and the fans were amazing! The combination of all made the 3rd annual Wolverine Classic a great success. At halftime of the 37-8 victory, Head Coach Larry Jobe and K Casey Clark (a former Larue County Hawk standout) presented Milissa French of America's Second Harvest a check for $3,150 to help support the BackPack Program.
On the field, the Wolverines improved their record to 8-0 with the victory.
Rookie Wr AJ French jump started the offense with 2 TD receptions in the first quarter while CB Chris Williams added another 2 TD on long punt returns. The Wolverine defense continued its stellar play, giving up only one TD on 25 yard pass in the final minutes of the contest. DE Brandon Ditto and DT Byron Tinker shared the defensive Player of the Week award with multiple hurries and 3 sacks between them.

Wolverines beat Warriors 54-0

Kendrick Johnson has never had a perfect game.
Until Saturday, that is.
Johnson completed all 10 of his passes for 215 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Hardin County Wolverines over the visiting Eastern Kentucky Warriors, 54-0, at West Hardin Middle School.
“I’m sure I was perfect passing tonight,” Johnson said. “It’s the first game I’ve done it. That’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”
The 39-year-old Johnson completed passes to seven receivers, including a 31-yard pass to world-class sprinter Dallas Robinson late in the game.
“I was kind of worried when he (Wolverines coach Larry Jobe) put Dallas on the post,” Johnson said. “I was like ‘Long pass, long pass.’ But he came up with it.”
Jobe, the Wolverines’ first-year coach who thought his quarterback was actually one year older than he is, was impressed with Johnson’s play.
“I was very impressed with the game that our quarterback turned in today,” Jobe said. “At 39 years old, it’s pretty impressive. Ken played a good ballgame today.”
Robinson, who was an Olympic hopeful up until six weeks ago when he pulled his hamstring at an invitational meet in Georgia, was making his first appearance with the Wolverines (6-0).
Robinson played football at Oldham County High School and Morehead State University and also ran track at Morehead, before transferring to Eastern Kentucky University.
“I knew it’d be one of two ways: A, I forget how bad it hurts to hit someone running full speed, so I run out and I clock someone and then I’m timid, or B, I’m going to come out timid and then I’m going to ease into it and remember it’s alright,” said the 6-foot-4, 230-pound Robinson. “I came out and clocked someone and it didn’t really hurt, so the rest of the game I was full go.”
With the Wolverines leading 21-0 in the first quarter, Robinson fell on a fumble in the end zone for his first touchdown.
“It felt good. I wish I would have got two of the fumbles I caused, but I didn’t get any of those,” Robinson said. “It felt good, it felt really good. I didn’t think my first touchdown would come from a fumble recovery, but it is what it is.”
In order to see where Robinson would best fit in, Jobe had him play four positions – defensive lineman, wide receiver, running back and special teams.
“I’m going to work with him some on receiver,” Jobe said. “I was surprised with his hands. He looked really good at defensive end. He was running through guys that weighed 300 pounds.”
Before the game, Robinson was worried he’d be timid when he stepped on the field for the first time. But those feelings went away when he knocked an Eastern Kentucky player to the ground.
“My first kickoff, I run down and run over some lineman, then I turn around and tackle a dude across the field,” Robinson said. “The next thing I remember, they’re having me on a post pattern. Before that, I was laying on a fumble in the end zone. Playing a bunch of positions, it’s hard to pinpoint anything I did well. I guess I just went all out every play. It was fun.
“It felt good to come out and show not all track guys are timid and afraid to hit and not all track guys have bad hands.”
The Wolverines took a 35-0 lead with 5:25 left in the second quarter as Cody Eubanks returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown.
The lead grew to 41-0 just before halftime when Johnson completed a 46-yard pass to Eubanks as time expired.
Following an Eastern Kentucky turnover, Johnson scored on an 11-yard run with 8:54 left in the third quarter for a 48-0 lead. Just as he crossed the goal-line, Johnson was hit and flipped upside down. Johnson landed on his head, but wasn’t hurt.
“I’m a little light headed, but that’s about it,” Johnson said. “I just looked up and said ‘I think I’ll run.’”
Eubanks scored on a 29-yard run with 23 seconds left in the game to make the final score.
Not bad for a team that hasn’t practiced in two weeks.
“We took off two weeks basically with no practices,” Jobe said. “We show up today and put up 54 points on the board. I think it’s a testament to the talent we’ve got on this team and the work ethic. I was more pleased with what I saw.”
The Warriors, a first-year team out of Harlan County, replaced the Nashville Kings on the Wolverines’ schedule. The Kings scheduled three teams on the same weekend and backed out late Thursday.
“We’ve got to play the cards we’re dealt,” Johnson said. “I’m glad they (the Warriors) came down and were able to step up. I’m glad they were, because usually at the last minute it’s hard for us to get a game.
“Anytime we get out there and execute some things and get some positive things going, it’s always a good thing. We weren’t able to practice this week, and I’m not saying this was a practice game, but anytime you come out here and execute, that’s good.”

Wolverines Run Record to 5-0
Posted: 6/22/2008
The Wolverines knocked off their first MCFL opponent of the season, even if it was a non league game. The Wolverines topped the expansion team Central Kentcky Studs 34-7 at West Hardin Middle School.
The Wolverines were led by some familiar stars but also got key contributions from several up and coming players with local ties. DE Brandon Ditto (Campbellsville U) exceeded even his own high standard of play, leading a stalwart defense with 5 sacks. New comer DT Byron Tinker (Marshall University) showed amazing athleticism making plays sideline to sideline, and rookie AJ Lewis (Bardstown HS). The linebacking corps also came up big with MLB Craig Murphy shutting down the bread and butter power running game of the Studs, while OLB's Steven Milesko (Etown HS) contributed 2 sacks and Chris Tompkins got on the score board with a safety in the second quarter.
The defensive secondary has very impressive in the last 3 games but overshadowed some by the front 7. That was not the case today. Cb's Chris Williams and Will Griffin both recorded intereceptions. Chris also showed his playmaking ability by lateraling to SS Cody Eubanks who took it to the house for a defensive score. Eubanks also delivered several crushing blows to the Studs' receivers, serving notice to all receivers looking for the ball that they do so at their own risk. FS Michael Skees did a little double duty at wide receiver and had touchdown reception in addition to his stellar defensive play that we've all become accustomed to.
The Wolverine offense put 34 points on the board despite missing 3 starters. Rookie RB Petri Mercado (Ft. Knox) made his presence known early and often. "Cado" powered the running, scoring twice and continually lowering his shoulder and taking the contact to the Studs' defense. All American WR Shaun Boykins (Murray State) had what for most players would be a career game, 9 receptions for 138 yards. For Shaun it was just another day at the office. If he maintains his current pace, Shaun will become the Wolverines all-time leading receiver this season. Boykins wasn't the only Wolverine that had soft hands on Saturday. FB Adrian Starks (Etown Hs) expanded on his normal role as lead blocker / battering ram with 5 catches out of the backfield and a few agile moves that left defenders wondering where he went.
The Wolverines go on the road to play 2007 AA National Champion Adams County (Decatur, Indiana) Patriots.

Wolverines improve to 4-0

The Hardin County Wolverines ran their season opening undefeated streak to four on Saturday in Cincinnati, Ohio, against the Cincinnati Falcons. The Wolverine defense also recorded its second shut-out in back to back weeks.
“Our defense stepped up again and played a very disciplined game. Players gang tackled on nearly every play with an intensity level that reflects the true character of the Wolverines” said coach Larry Jobe.
Steven Milesko was awarded the Defensive player of the game due to his 7 solo tackles, 5 assists and recovered fumble in the end zone for the final touchdown in the fourth quarter.”Steven is an exciting young player with a very bright future with our team” said coach Jobe.
The Wolverine offensive line dictated the pace of the game. “Having all five starters together for the last several weeks has allowed us to gel. Next week’s game will be the true test” according to All-League offensive tackle Rodrick Tinker. Running backs Marvin Swope and Moonie Cunningham continued their scoring sprees, with a second consecutive week of 3 combined touchdowns.
The Wolverines return home next week to face off against the MCFL expansion Central Kentucky Studs in the “Battle of the Bluegrass”. The Studs are based out of Harrodsburg, Ky. Kick-off is at 6pm at West Hardin Middle School. Prior to the game there will be a FREE Punt, Pass and Kick competition for all kids, ages 7 -14. Wolverines Improve to 3-0
Posted: 5/31/2008
The Hardin County Wolverines faced off against the St. Louis based East Central Missouri Eagles at West Hardin Middle School. In this initial meeting between the two squads, the Wolverines came out of the chute quickly. The Eagles won the coin toss and elected to receive but were held in check by a defense led by lineman Brandon Ditto.
After the change of possession, the high powered Wolverine offense took the field. The unit has been averaging 51 points per game so far this season. The run game was first to strike as All-American running back Moonie Cunningham found the end zone from 5 yards out at the 11:07 mark of the first quarter. Wolverines 7-0.
The Wolverine defense remained stout on the following possession setting up the hardest hitting play of the game. The Eagles punted to the Wolverine 30 yard line but the wall was set up to perfection, springing Cody Eubanks down the sideline. He was finally brought down at the Eagle 10. Two plays later running back Marvin Swope scored off the left side for his first score of the day. Wolverines 14-0.
Swope would cap off another drive near the end of the second quarter from 2 yards out. The extra point was no good. Wolverines 20-0.
The Eagle offense regrouped with a minute left in the first half, connecting on a long pass to move in to field goal range. Time appeared to expire but they were able to get a timeout called with 1 second left on the clock. However, the ensuing field goal missed wide left as the half ended.
Defense ruled the second half for both teams. Ditto paced the defensive line with 3 sacks and Eubanks recorded his first interception of the season. “It was great to get our first shutout of the season but we know we need to keep working to get ready for the competition in the Mid-Continental Football League,” says Ditto.
The Wolverine offense would strike one last time in the fourth quarter. Qb Ken Johnson found rookie wide receiver Derrick Ruffin streaking down the field, Eagle secondary trailing close behind. The pass was complete and Ruffin was off to the races only to be brought down inside the Eagle 10. On the next play the tandem hooked up again for the score. The extra point attempt was no good. Wolverines 26-0.
Of the Wolverine shut out, Head Coach Larry Jobe says, “While I was pleased with the performance of the team at this stage of the season, there is still a long way to go for us to reach our potential. It’s critical that the players continue to work hard in practice, and systematically improve each and every week.”
Next game June 14 at Cincinnati Falcons

Congratulations gentlemen, the Wolverine Family is proud of you!
Wolverines Prevail after slow start
Posted: 5/11/2008
The Wolverines came into Saturday's game against the Mt Carmel Fire not knowing exactly what to expect. The two teams had never faced off, and even if they had the Fire were completely re-vamped from their inaugural 2007 season.
The Wolverines won the toss and the offense was clicking from the opening drive. Ken Johnson led a systematic march down the field for the opening score.
The Fire were able to match the Wolverines strike for strike in the first half, including a long pass on their first offensive play that went for 60 yard touchdown.
The outcome of the game was still in question at the beginning of the second half with the score tied at 27. Momentum appeared to be on the side of the Fire but one key member of the Wolverines vaunted rookie class took over. Wr Antonio Dilworth streaked past the Fire secondary for long touchdowns on successive possessions to blow open the game.
The Wolverine defense stiffened in the second half keyed by two interceptions, the first by cb Michael Skees was returned for a touchdown. LB Chris Tompkins put the final nail in the coffin picking off a Fire throw to end a last gasp attempt to get back into the game.

Wolverines Open 2008 Season with a Victory
Posted: 4/4/2008
The Hardin County Wolverines kicked off the 2008 season with at 40-12 win over the Tri-State Sharks.
The game was very typical of an opening day, with both offenses struggling with timing and turning the ball over frequently. The Wolverines were the first to get untracked scoring on their opening possesion when Qb Ken Johnson found All-American Wr Shaun Boykins down the right sideline for a 37 yard touchdown pass. After a botched extra point attempt and fumble, Brandon Ditto recovered and rumbled 3 yards for the 2-pt conversion. 8-0
The Wolverines got on the board for the second time with a sweep around left end by Marvin Swope from 2 yards out to extend the lead to 12-0. The extra point, as was the rule on the muddy field, was no good.
The Wolverine defense joined the scoring when Ray Huff, the former Kentucky State standout, intercepted a Sharks' pass in the flats and returned it 20 yards for the score.
The second half scoring came from a variety of sources. Wr Phil Allen scored on a 17 yard run, CB Chris Williams returned the first of his two interceptions 65 yards for a score, while Wr Aaron Coney showed off some of his track speed on a 40 yards scoring run.
The Sharks defense also showed up on the board with a 70 yd interception return, while the Sharks offense closed out the scoring with a nice drive capped by a 15 yd touchdown pass.

Wolverine Victory
Posted: 1/12/2008
YOUR Hardin County Wolverines faced off against a very talented Dakota Lawdawg team in the North-South Challenge Bowl, sponsored by the Minor League Football News.
The Wolverines, ranked #17 nationally, came away with a 31-6 victory.
Phil Allen made the first big play of the game, returning the opening kick-off past mid-field. The offense took advantage of the great field position and drove for the score, a play action pass from rookie QB Seth Ellis to tight end Ken Johnson. Snap on the PAT was bobbled. Wolverines 6-0
After trading punts for several possessions, Allen showcased his return abilities once again. Taking a Lawdawg punt at his own 40, Allen broke a tackle and found a seam up the left sideline for the score. The Wolverines went for the 2 pt conversion but an Ellis pass fell incomplete. Wolverines 12-0.
In the final minute of the first half, stand out Lawdawg QB Wright led his team into scoring position. The drive was boosted by a pass interference penalty on the Wolverine secondary. The Lawdawgs converted a 35 yd field as time expired.Wolverines 12-3.
The second half started just as the first half ended. Lawdawgs received the kick off and began marching down the field using a good mix of run and play action passes to their All-American TE Will Walker. The drive stalled at the Wolverine 11, but the Lawdawgs were able to hit a 28 yd field goal. Wolverines 12-6.
It was all Wolverines the rest of the game. The ensuing possession, Ellis led the offense to the red zone using the quick passing game to counter the Lawdawg pressure defense. RB Marvin Swope capped off the drive with 2 strong runs, the last a 1 yd plunge for a TD. Wolverines 18-6
Forced out of their game plan, the Lawdawgs came out passing. This played to the strength of the Wolverine defense. All American defensive end Brandon Ditto was able to focus on the pass rush and spent most of the 2nd half in the Lawdawg backfield. Ditto recorded 3 sacks and forced one fumble. Rookie CB Cody Eubanks was the beneficiary of the pressure, recording an interception and returning it 25 yards.
Mid-way through the 4th quarter the Wolverines put the final nail in the coffin. Ellis found his veteran receiver Jerome Davidson streaking down the sideline a step behind the secondary. Davidson caught the ball in stride, extending the lead to 19 points. Wolverines 25-6.
The Lawdawgs mounted one last drive and were able to move to midfield. The drive came to unexpected halt on a bobbled hand off, which was recovered by the Wolverines.
The Wolverines closed out the scoring with 2 minutes to go on Ellis' 3rd td pass, this one to Eubanks on a quick slant from 7 yards out.
Final Score: Wolverines 31 - Lawdawgs 6

The Hardin County Wolverines are preparing for a return to south Florida this January. After an undefeated regular season in 2006, the Wolverines were invited to play for the Minor League Football News National Championship. This season the Wolverines could not quite duplicate those efforts but still had a very succsessful season, finishing 10-2, and ranked #17 in the nation. As a reward for their efforts, the Wolverines are returning to Florida to face off against the Dakota Lawdawgs, who finished 12-2-1 in the NAFL, in the North vs South Challenge Bowl. The Lawdawgs hail from Sioux Falls, South Dakota and are currently ranked #19. Be sure to look for a game recap in the Sunday Edition of the News-Enterprise, January 13th.
Kick Off is January 11, at 7 pm.
MLFN Mid-West Region All-American Team

The Hardin County Wolverine Family would like to congratulate several players for being honored by the Minor League Football News for their performance in 2007.
1st team
Rookie running back Moonie Cunningham burst on to the scene this year with a monster game in front of the TV cameras against the Indiana Mustangs. Moonie went over 100 yards and had a hand in 4 touchdowns on the game. Look for the former Campbellsville standout to be a fixture in the Wolverine backfield for years to come.
Seasoned veteran WR Shaun Boykins, the former Murray State Racer, has made multiple appearances on the all-american list and 2007 was no less justified. Shaun was the go to receiver, leading the Wolverines in receptions for the second consecutive year.
Brandon Ditto built on his dominant rookie year in 2006, wreaking havoc across the MCFL. Brandon was recognized as defensive lineman of the week by the league 4 times in 2007 and led the Wolverines in sacks for the second consecutive season. High motor player with an opportunity to move into the professional ranks in '08.
2nd Team
George Madison, the Wolverines tasmanian devil, made a name for himself on the defensive side of ball in his 2006 rookie campaign. After a year in the system his athletic ability is starting to take over. George combined with Ditto to make a formidable pass rush, as many qb's will attest. The sky is the limit for George, and '08 promises to be even better for this former Purdue basketball player.
