4th Annual Wolverine Charity Classic

Hodgenville, Ky
The Wolverines would like to thank Sam Sanders (Larue County School Superintendent) and Feeding America's Milissa French and Faith Miller for partnering with us on the 4th Annual Wolverine Charity Classic. The BackPack Program is such a deserving cause and the Wolverines are thrilled to continue that relationship. The game raised $2,500 for the program last night.
The Wolverines looked to close out the 2010 regular season on a high note to get ready for upcoming playoffs. Having faced the Columbus Gladiators earlier in the season, the team knew what to expect and came out blazing from the opening kick off.
The Wolverines debuted the old school wish bone formation and proceed to impose their will on the Gladiators from the very first drive. RB Mooning Cunningham and Marvin Swope alternated plunges into the line before 265 pound FB Craig Murphy bowled into the endzone for the first score of the game.
The Gladiators, virtually eliminated from the playoff picture prior to the game, had little to play for and seemed demoralized by the start. On their second play from scrimmage, CB Michael Skees picked off a Gladiator pass in the endzone for a touchback giving the Wolverines the ball on the 20.
QB Kendrick Johnson took full advantage of the situation on the first play of the drive. Johnson sent WR Anthony Burnes deep and connected on an 80 yard touchdown to the former EKU star. Burnes scored again later in the game to give him 10 td's on the season.
Burnes' two TD were only good enough for 3rd place on the day as two other Wolverines also shined on the day. Rookie WR Jujaun Spillman continued his hot streak with 3 TD catches on the day and RB Moonie Cunningham had 3 on the ground.
The defense had a great team effort while pitching the shutout. CB Marcus Floyd added a circus worthy interception, DE Mario "little Sapp" Berry picked up a fumble and RUMBLED for 45 yards and DE Randy Driver appeared to spend more time in the Gladiator backfield than some of their own players.
The Wolverines have a week off to get ready for the start of the playoffs.

Thunder quieted, Wolverines clinch #1 seed
Posted: 8/2/2010
North Hardin, HS
The Wolverines came into week 8 of the GDFL season undefeated and a chance to cement their place as the number 1 seed on their side of the playoff bracket. All that stood in the way was geographical rival Derby City Thunder from Louisville.
The teams have a long standing rivalry at least in name. The Wolverines are undefeated in 6 match ups with the Thunder but there would be no looking past any opponent. The stakes were too high. The Wolverines were focused and the results proved it.
The Thunder won the opening toss and got the ball first. After a questionable decision to squib kick, the Thunder started with excellent field position. The Wolverine defense was undeterred, refusing to yield a single first down and thwarting a 4th down attempt.
The Wolverine offense took advantage of the situation, moving down field in bursts. RB Marvin Swope, a former Minor League Football News All-American, gashed the right side for a 9 yard gain. WR Anthony Burnes broke free on a short catch and scampered 20 yards. WR Jersey Stewart drew first blood with a leaping one handed catch and toe tap along the sideline to put the Wolverines up 6-0. The PAT failed after a bad snap.
The Thunder were not ready to throw in the towel just yet. Another squib kick put the pressure on the Wolverine defense but this time they did not hold up. The Thunder used a good mix of pass and run to move into scoring position and QB Tony Blocker was able to find a receiver in the endzone for the score.
The 2pt conversion attempt was no good, leaving the score tied 6-6.
The Wolverine offense continued their perfect start, scoring another touchdown on their second drive. FB Mario Berry has become a short yardage closer this season. He converted again, this time through the air, taking a 4 yard pass from QB Kendrick Johnson. Wolverines 13-6
The Special Teams got into the act on the next possession. The Thunder offense was backed up inside their own 10 yard line and were forced to punt. WR Jujuan Spillman went back to receive. After an initial bobble, Spillman broke to his left. Lead by two blocks from Marcus Commodore, Spillman went 58 yards for the touchdown. Wolverines 20-6.
While he takes great pleasure in delivering the big blocks to spring a teammate, Commodore got his own chance to get into the endzone. Commodore caught a pass down the left sideline and eluded 3 different defenders with 3 successive spin moves that brought oh's and ah's even from the announcer.Wolverines 26-6.

Wolverines throttle Sharks,take league lead

The Kentucky Wolverines entered the game in a 3 way tie for first place in the Impact Conference of the GDFL but left standing alone at the top. The 46-20 win over the Sharks and the stunning upset of the West Tennessee War Eagles have resulted in the Wolverines being in the drivers seat for playoff positioning.
The Wolverines were facing fellow unbeaten Tri-State Sharks in what looked like the game of the week. After 1 quarter of play it was 3-0 Wolverines with points coming from the powerful leg of K Tyler Enlow. From the beginning of the 2nd quarter on the differences between the two teams became very evident.
The Wolverine defense was smothering, not allowing a first down on 3 consecutive possessions and repeatedly giving the Wolverine offense the ball against an overmatched Shark defense. Wolverine rookie WR Jujuan Spillman made several splash plays in his debut, including a 46 yd run to the Shark 4 yard line setting up RB Moonie Cunningham for the first TD of the day.
The defense quickly stole the ball back from the Sharks as SS Branden Baker snagged an interception and drew a 15 yd face mask penalty on the return. The offense couldn't punch it in for a TD but K Enlow found his mark again, extending the lead to 13-0.
WR Marcus Commodore reminded everyone why he is one of the most fear players in the open field in the league by catching a QB Kendrick Johnson pass and running by, through and around the Sharks defense for a 45 yd TD, 20-0 Wolverines.
SS Baker had a chance to extend the lead with another interception and nothing but space in front of him but a small bobble of the ball resulted in it being ruled incomplete. The Sharks were able to punt away on the next play but the outcome would soon be the same as WR Spillman caught a screen pass from Johnson and streaked down the left side for another score. Wolverines 27-0.
With under a minute remaining and the ball, the Sharks were trying to get on the board to build some momentum before halftime instead of kneeling on the ball. It turned out to be a bad decision as CB Brandon Yates read the screen play perfectly, picking off the pass and racing untouched for the defensive score. Wolverines 33-0
The 2nd half played much more evenly as the Wolverines appeared to lose focus with the big lead. The Sharks returned the opening kickoff for a their first score of the game.
The Wolverine offense stayed on target, methodically marching down the field. The long drive was capped off by a 3 yard run by FB Mario Berry. Berry has been a tank in short yardage situations this season. Wolverines 39-Sharks 8
The achilles heel of the Wolverines this season has been the desperation bombs by opposing teams and tonight would be no different. The Sharks connected on two, sandwiched around another WR Commodore TD catch, to make the final score Wolverines 46 Sharks 20.

Wolverines win tale of two halves
Posted: 7/11/2010
Columbus, OH
The Wolverines played a Jeckyl and Hyde game in a 35-18 win over the Columbus Gladiators in a game that marked the halfway point in the inaugural GDFL season. It could be expected that the Wolverines may start the game slowly after the 4 hour trip but that could not have been farther from the case.
The Wolverines won the toss and elected to take the ball. Behind a patchwork offensive line missing 3 starters for much of the game, the ground game reeled off several first downs before bogging down in the red zone.
The defense took the field with a stellar reputation and lived up to every inch of it. The Wolverines shut down the Gladiator offense without allowing a first down. A short punt by the Gladiators set up the Wolverines first score. After two offensive first downs, the Wolverines found themselves inside the 5 yd line. RB Moonie Cunningham plunged off the right side behind tackle Rodrick Tinker for the first score of the game.
The Gladiators offense was unable to match with a drive of their own and the Wolverines were off and running. QB Brian Miller lead a methodical march down the field before finding WR Anthony Burnes across the middle for a 20 yd TD pass. Burnes has made it customary to score at least once per game this season as he and WR Jersey Stewart battle for the TD reception lead.
Special teams contributed the 3rd score of the game as WR AJ French has taken over the PR duties. In only his second game in this role, French has already returned two punts for TD’s. French’s combination of size, strength and field vision has proven to make him nearly impossible to tackle in the open field. FB Mario Berry caught a quick pass in the flat for the 2pt conversion to make the score 21-0.
After K Tyler Enlow’s kick off pinned the Gladiators deep, the defense struck again. LB’s Matt Quinn and Kevin Jackson converged on the Gladiator QB and forced a fumble that Quinn appeared to return for a defensive score. Quinn was ruled down inside the 5 so the offense came on the field. RB Moonie Cunningham, who continues to post all-league type statistics despite consistently being pulled early from games due to the score differentials, capped off the drive for his 2nd TD of the game. Wolverines lead 28-0
The Gladiators punted on the following drive and the Wolverines looked to put the final nail in the coffin but the exact opposite occurred. QB Miller threw an untimely interception with just seconds to go in the half and Gladiators returned it for the TD. The celebration was cut short since the Gladiators were called offside on the play. Fortunately the points came off the board and the Wolverines kneeled out the half on the next play. What didn’t change was the renewed hope the Gladiators found in the near defensive score. The 2nd half showed what the Gladiators are capable of accomplishing.
The Gladiators took the opening kick of the 2nd half and inserted a new QB. Behind their new field general, the Gladiators marched down the field. After a failed running attempt, the Gladiators converted a 15 yd pass for their first score of the game.
The Wolverine offense was able to answer on their next drive. Behind a balance mix of run and pass, Miller led the team into Gladiator territory. The defense stiffened but was unable to stop a perfect pass from Miller to WR Antoin Sain who made a Lynn Swann-like leaping catch between two defenders and toe tapped to keep his feet in bounds for the score. K Enlow converted the XP to extend the lead to 35-6.
To their credit, the Gladiators had not given up despite the deficit and stifling heat of the day. After several short drives by both teams, the Gladiators struck deep for another score on what must have been a blown coverage by the secondary. The Gladiator receiver ran untouched on a post route, splitting two safeties on his way to a score narrowing the deficit to 35-12.
The defense redeemed itself somewhat on the next drive as LB Larry Starks intercepted his second pass of the season and returned it 20 yards.
The Wolverine offense had the opportunity to run out the clock with a couple of first downs but a missed blocking assignment resulted in a forced fumble and recovery by the Gladiators. The Gladiators took quick advantage of the turnover with another deep ball that two Wolverines had a chance to make a play on. The Gladiator receiver caught the ball as one Wolverine fell and another could only pursue into the endzone.

Goshen, Oh
The Wolverines did not know what to expect on their trip to Goshen to face off against the Rampage. The Rampage are a first year team who the Wolverines had not even seen film of and the Wolverines were traveling without 21 players including 8 starters. It was set up to be a disaster.
Through one quarter of play the game was almost even, the only score being Wolverines LB Matt Quinn's interception return for TD. K Tyler Enlow converted the XP to make it 7-0.
The 2nd quarter saw the flood gates open. The Rampage wilted under the pressure of the Wolverine defense, turning the ball over repeatedly. Long time MLB Craig Murphy was the primary beneficiary, getting 2 fumble recoveries and an interception, returning 2 of the 3 for scores. The Wolverine defense again did not give up a point. The Rampages only score of the game came on a fumbled Wolverine handoff that was returned for a score.
Offensively, several Wolverines found the endzone. RB Moonie Cunningham ran for 3 TD's as he continues to establish himself as potentially the best RB in the league. WR Anthony Burnes got his usual TD catch, as did fellow WRs AJ French, Marcus Commodore, and Victor Cox. QB Brian Miller made plays with both his arm and feet this week, scoring a rushing TD in addition to his passing TDs.
The special teams units were led by K Tyler Enlow, who had one on the best performances by a kicker in Wolverine history. Enlow went 11 for 11 on extra points and added a 37 yard field goal (that would have been good from 50) giving him 14 points on the day.
The Wolverines head into the 4th of July bye week with a 4-0 league record (6-1 overall) and tied atop the conference standings with the West Tenn War Eagles.

Wolverines quiet Thunder, win 20-0
Posted: 6/20/2010
Louisville, Kentucky
There was a lot of hype coming in to this weeks game between the Kentucky Wolverines and the Derby City Thunder. With the two teams located so close together there is a lot of familiarity between the teams. As the saying goes, Familiarity breeds contempt. Thunder players, still beating their chests after a lopsided win over the Hoptown Marauders last week, predicted a shutout win this week. Well, they were half right, getting the shutout part correct at least.
The Wolverine defense continued to show contempt for every opposing offense, pitching its 3rd shutout in 6 games. This game was quite possibly the most dominant of the season. While the official stats are not complete yet, it would be a huge shock if the Thunder offense tallied more than 100 yards on the day. Big plays came from all over the field. CB Brandon Yates picked off yet another ball this week and added a sack to his highlight reel season. CB Michael Skees pitched in with a sack and a forced fumble on defense and a TD catch on offense. SS Brandon Baker shut down yet another Thunder drive with an interception when the ball deflected off the hands of a Thunder running back who was bracing for the oncoming hit.
The front seven on defense eliminated any thoughts of a Thunder running game early on. DE's Eric Cecil, Willie Washington and Von Smith penetrated into the backfield at will On the rare occasion when they did not make the play the LB trio of Craig Murphy, Thurman Wade and Matt Quinn showed why they could very well be the best corp in the league.
Offensively the Wolverines got off to a slow start, not getting into the endzone until the 2nd quarter. Moving the ball was not an issue, but the Wolverines were not able to cap off their first two drives with scores. QB Brian Miller found WR Anthony Burnes early in the second for a long score. Burnes shrugged off a helpless Thunder defender and was off to the races.
On the next drive Miller methodically led the offense down the field with a series of short passes and draws to offset the Thunder's attempt to pressure. RB Moonie Cunningham closed the deal with a 3 yard run behind RT Rodrick Tinker to extend the lead to 13. A miscue on the extra point kept the lead at lead at 13 as a Tyler Enlow pass to RB Jammie Kyle fell incomplete.
The second half brought on QB Kendrick Johnson to put the nail in the Thunder coffin. Using a good mix of RB's Cunningham and Kelvin Stewart to grind out first downs and eat up the clock forced the Thunder defense into the box. Johnson then found Skees on slant. Skees broke one tackle and out raced the rest of the defense to the corner of the endzone.
The Wolverines scored again in the 4th quarter on a 93 yard pass from Johnson to WR Jersey Stewart but the play was called back on a questionable clipping call on Burnes20 yards behind the play. The Wolverines were driving again on the next possession but the Thunder coaching staff waved the white flag asked the referees to call the game with 6+ minutes left to go.

The Wolverines offense recovered from a tough outing last week to make amends and it was a team effort. The coaching staff made a commitment to the running game and it paid off early. RB Moonie Cunningham led the charge on the first drive of the game. Behind newly installed FB Mario Berry and the devastating blocking of interior lineman Will Gast, Milt Smith and Eric Cecil, Cunningham marched down the field to put the Wolverines in scoring position. QB Kendrick Johnson took advantage of the situation, finding rookie WR Victor Cox in the endzone for his first career TD reception.
The Wolverine defense continued it's stellar play this season. DE Randy Driver is developing into a pass rushing force, notching 3 sacks on the day. LB Matt Quinn added 2 more while LB Thurman Wade made plays from sideline to sideline.
The 2nd team linebackers also contributed two big plays as Larry Starks made a leaping interception near the end of the first half that led to an offensive touchdown and Matt Farmer recovered a fumble to bring an early end to a Raptor drive near the end of the game.
While the defense was outstanding, that has become the norm for that unit. The marked improvement of the offense was the real story of the day. WR Jersey Stewart, with 3 TD receptions, led a long list of players who made big plays.
QB Kendrick Johnson threw for multiple TD's, WR Anthony Burnes added another TD reception to his resume, WR AJ French had 2 big catches and a knockout block, WR Marcus Commodore continues to be nearly untouchable with the ball in his hands, QB Brian Green turned a busted play into a 40 yard scramble for a touchdown and FB Mario Berry also scored his first TD as a Wolverine on a pass from QB Brian Miller.
The Wolverines travel to Louisville next week to face off against the Derby City Thunder in an early season battle for playoff position.
Wolverines Fall to Storm
Posted: 6/7/2010
Nashville
The Wolverines geared up for by far the their biggest test of the season, traveling to Nashville to face the perennial national contender Storm on their home turf. This is a rivalrly that is quickly becoming one of the region's, if not nation's, best.
Despite playing in different leagues with drastically different starting dates, the Wolverines and Storm have faced off in 3 of the last 5 years. The Wolverines won the first two battles of the series, although by the slimmest of margins both times.
This year shaped up to be another nail biter. The Wolverines had the advantage of having had 3 tune up games and the Storm boasted a larger roster with the depth that affords and the home field advantage.
In a game of big plays, the Storm jumped out to an early lead by connecting on a Phellepe Hall bomb over CB Brandon Yates. The Wolverines battled back with two big plays of their own, first a completion by QB Brian Miller that WR Anthony Burnes turned into a long gainer. Then on a 4th & 5 play, RB Moonie Cunningham busted off tackle on the right side for 45 yard touchdown run to tie the score.
At the break the score was tied 7-7 and momentum seemed to be on the side of the Wolverines, especially with them due to receive the second half kick off.
The second half remained a defensive struggle. Both defenses forced punts on the first 3 drives before a special teams gaffe changed the course of the game. The Wolverines punt team overlooked an injured player and went out with 10 men. Rushing a player on at the last moment didn't help as a Storm player came in untouched to block P Tyler Enlow's punt out of the back of the endzone for a sefety.
A big return on the ensuing free kick led to a short drive that resulted in a Storm field goal extending the lead to 12-7.
More than the points on the scoreboard, momentum had changed hands. Another 3 and out for the Wolverine offense gave the Storm the ball back and they were on the march against an exhausted Wolverine defense. Entering the red zone, it appeared the Storm were set to put the final nail in the coffin but DB Michael Skees picked off a Hall pass at the Wolverine 10 and was off to the races. Weaving in and out of traffic, Skees was finally brought down at the Storm 4 yard line. The turnover brought new life to the Wolverines but it was short lived. Despite 4 cracks at the endzone from inside the 5 yard line the Wolverines were unable to score the go ahead touchdown.
The Storm tacked on a 4th quarter FG to increase the lead to 8 but several mental errors on their final drive almost let the game slip away. First on an option play, the Storm fumbled but were able to recover when DE Eric Cecil bobble the ball trying to pick it up on the run. A few plays later the back up Storm QB dropped the snap and the Wolverines recovered. After 2 personal fouls against the Storm, the Wolverines had 30 seconds to tie the score. After a hurried drive the Wolverines had one final shot from the Storm 20 with 1.1 seconds left on the clock. QB Brian Miller scrambled and let one fly into the endzone but the pass was deflected and fell harmlessly to the ground.
Storm triumphs 15-7.

Wolverines move to 3-0

Memphis, TN
The Wolverines made the trip to Memphis to face the Blast this past Saturday. After the long bus ride the Wolverines got off to a slow start offensively.
QB Brian Miller led the team into scoring position on the first drive of the game but a false start penalty led to the drive stalling at the Blast 34 yard line. K Darwin Perez came on to attempt the 51 yard field goal and launched a towering kick that came down inches short, hitting the crossbar and bouncing back into the endzone.
The Wolverine defense continued it's stellar season throughout the game. Lead by Defensive Player of the Game CB Alvin Pate, the Wolverines came up with stop after stop. Pate had an interception and several big hits on the night.
The Wolverine offense got on the board on their 3rd drive of the night. After a Blast fumble, the Wolverines started at midfield and converted a couple first downs behind the running of RB Moonie Cunningham. Perez got another opportunity and this time he split the uprights for the first score of the night.
The lead was extended in the 2nd quarter, once through the air and once on the ground. WR Anthony Burnes caught a deep ball from Miller to make it 10-0 and rookie RB Kelvin Turner plunged in from close range to wrap up the 1st half scoring with the Wolverines leading 17-0.
The 2nd half was more of the same dominating play by the Wolverine defense. LB Matt Quinn, DE Randy Driver, and DT's AJ Lewis and Will Washington took turns flying into the Blast backfield and disrupting the action. The vaunted defense forced multiple turnovers on the night while the first unit did not allow a drive into their red zone.
The offense got over the initial sluggishness from the long bus ride in the second half. Miller connected on long gains to Burnes and fellow WRs AJ French. Another would be touchdown pass fell incomplete with WR Marcus Commodore well beyond the Blast secondary. On the ground, Turner continued his impressive debut with a second scoring run.
The subsequent kickoff yielded another turnover as WR Jersey Stewart forced a fumble inside the 10 yard line. Quinn, who also doubles as a short yardage back, showed his value by taking a few Blast defenders into the endzone with him on the next play
Stewart had another big showing offensively as well. Stewart took a short screen from QB Kendrick Johnson at the Blast 45 and after sidestepping the first wave of tacklers turned on the speed and closed out the scoring for the Wolverines.

May 8, 2010 Cincinnati, Oh
The Wolverines took the road for the first time in 2010 and the defense was ready for the trip. Missing several starters due to a number of graduations that conflicted with the game time, the depleted squad still put in a dominating performance
LB Matt Quinn and DT AJ Lewis appeared to be involved in each and every stop. They led a charge that harassed the Midwest Panthers quarterback unmercifully. LB Thurman Wade, CB Brandon Yates and CB Brian Miller all chipped in with interceptions. Miller made a bobbling circus catch on his play and sprinted down the sideline for the first score of the game to give the Wolverines a lead that would not be relinquished. The second defense preserved the shut out from late in the 3rd quarter on and several players are earning contributing roles. DE's Devon Smith and Richard Hamilton each contributed a sack and LB Matt Farmer played well during extended stretches due to injuries in the lineback corps.
Special teams set up the next score when Mike Woolfork went back to receive a Panthers punt. Woolfork side stepped the first defender, bounced outside and made it deep inside Panther territory before finally being nudged out of bounds. RB Moonie Cunningham capped the drive off on the ground from 6 yards out to extend the lead to 13. K Darwin Perez, who was 3 for 3 on the day, made it 14 with the point after.
The offense was still working off some rust in this game but began to show signs of life. WRs Marcus Commodore, AJ French and Jersey Stewart all had big catches of 20 yards or more and Cunningham had a very productive day on the ground. QB Brian Green capped off the scoring with a scramble off the left side in the 3rd quarter.
The Wolverines won 21-0 but the biggest story lines of the game were the defense, which has yet to be scored on while scoring two touchdowns themselves, and the punishing physical nature of the team. Quinn, Stewart, and WR Shaun Boykins all had crushing blows that left their opponents gasping for air (and fortunately uninjured).
Game Balls go to LB Tyjuan Jones and WR Anthony Burnes.
Tyjuan and Anthony graduated from Eastern Kentucky University yesterday. Congratulations!

The Wolverines improved an already strong linebacking corp with the addition of Matt Quinn (Boyle Co, Campbellsive U) and upgraded the kicking game with Darwin Perez (Larue Co)
Matt Quinn had a stellar high school career, highlighted by 2 state championships with Boyle County. Individual accolades included being named to the All-State team 3 times as linebacker and making it on both offense and defense his senior season. Quinn graduated as the schools top season (1,888 yd) and career (4,345) rusher while scoring 73 tds.
At Cambpellsville Quinn was a two time all conference performer and team captain. Quinn's athletic ability and experience playing professionally in the arena leagues has him poised to be a stalwart on the defensive side of the ball. Don't be surprise if he gets an opportunity to show off some of his old running back moves in certain situations as well.
Darwin Perez is getting back into football after a highly regarded high school career at Larue County. Stories of his leg strength had reached near legendary heights, but in this case they were very accurate. On just his first day of practice, Darwin demonstrated tremendous distance on his field goals. Consistently hitting from 50 yards, he kept backing the ball up to determine his limits. His best kick of the day was good from 59 yards and may have had a yard or two to spare.
Perez and Punter Tyler Enlow combine to give the Wolverines what should be one of the best pairs of kickers in minor league football. Special teams will be one more edge the team should have over the competition.
Wolverines continue to bolster roster
Posted: 3/30/2010
The Kentucky Wolverines continue to stockpile talent for the 2010 season.
CB / Return Michael Skees re-signed with the Wolverines this past weekend. Skees comes back for his 5th season with the team. Skees is blessed with unusual talent that has allowed him to excel in a variety of roles with the team. He has been recognized as an all-american as a return man and all-league at both WR and Safety but has also played RB, CB and even OLB in some defensive sets. Skees' signing solidifies both the defensive secondary and kick return units.
WR Jersey Stewart signed with the Wolverines Saturday. This will be Stewart's first year with the team but expectations still run high. Stewart had a stellar career at UVA-Wise. He was a standout WR and was recognized as one of the top return men in NAIA in 2003. After college, Stewart played professionally with the Lexington Horsemen along with fellow Wolverines LB Brandon Francis and DE Willie Washington.

Great weekend for Wolverine organization!
Posted: 3/9/2010
This past weekend was very productive for the Wolverines.
Saturday was the first practice for the 2010 season and it started the right way. The coaching staff is already in mid-season form. Practice was crisp, fast paced and right on time. The 45 players represented a good mix of returning veterans and fresh talent. Look for the Wolverines to be a contender in both league play and on the national scene.
Sunday was our first of many scheduled events this season to give back to the community. Fifteen members of the Wolverine family participated in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake. K Casey Clark took top honors with a high score of 256. The more important number was 901, which was the amount of the money the Wolverines were able to contribute to the cause.
The Wolverine and BBBS have had a long standing partnership. Our next joint event is the 4th Annual Wolverine Charity Classic May 15th at TK Stone Middle School.

The Wolverine roster continues to add talent and new blood to an already impressive array of talent.
This week's additions:
Chris Coleman, CB (Kentucky State) - Chris is a returning starter from 2009 and will be in a position battle with with several new comers looking unseat the wily veteran.
Mike Woolfork, RB / WR (Campbellsville) Mike is one of the top athletes on the team, with an unusual combination of speed and size. His versatility could land him in almost any position on the team. RB, WR, TE, or even Safety or OLB, Mike has the ability to play any or all of the above.
Brian Green, QB (Watertown Red & Black) Brian practiced a few times with the team last season but moved to the area after the deadline to add new players. He demonstrated excellent arm strength in his limited audition and big things are expected of him this upcoming season. In a testament to his athletic ability, Brian played safety for his former team (Watertown) in the National Football Events bowl game last month.
From Semi-pro to the Superbowl
Posted: 1/28/2010
This a great story about a semi pro player from Pittsburgh who eventually caught on in the NFL. This is the 3rd player i've heard of just this year who has used minor league football as a springboard to bigger and better things.
Here is an excerpt. Click on the text for the full story...
That Darnell Dinkins will play in Super Bowl XLIV is an inspirational tale of faith and perseverance. Nine years ago, Dinkins was playing quarterback for the semi-pro Pittsburgh Colts. Now, he will play tight end against the Indianapolis Colts on Feb. 7 at Sun Life Stadium in South Florida.
"It's just amazing, when I reflect on all the sacrifices I had to go through on this journey, now, to play in the biggest game in sports, is just surreal," said Dinkins, 32, an eighth-year veteran. "I drop to my knees every morning and pray to God and thank him for this opportunity. How many times can a guy go from semi-pro to the Super Bowl? It's almost unheard of."
It's the stuff of legends. Johnny Unitas did it, but that was more than a half-century ago. That's why Dinkins counts his blessings. He escaped the Hill's Elmore Square housing project at a time when gangs were running the neighborhood. He was a star quarterback at Schenley, but never could crack the lineup under Johnny Majors or Walt Harris at Pitt. Dinkins switched to safety, but lost his starting job to Ramon Walker as a senior.
That didn't deter Dinkins' dream of playing in the NFL.
"He stayed focused. He kept his foot in the door and worked to provide for his family," said his mother, Wendy Dinkins, who now lives in the Stanton Heights home the son she still calls "D.J." bought her three years ago. "I'm so proud of him — it's making me cry — because he never gave up."
Wolverines building momentum

The Wolverine season is beginning to take shape. The Wolverine Charity classic will have a rare double dip in 2010, partnering with both Big Brothers Big Sisters and Feeding America's BackPack Program. More details to follow.
The Wolverines will also be participating in the BBBS Bowl for Kids Sake on Sunday, March 7th at 3 pm. If you would like to bowl with the Wolverines and raise money for a great cause, please use the Contact Us link to let me know.
DT AJ Lewis from Bardstown HS has officially been re-signed for the 2010 season. This will be AJ's 3rd year with the team. Expectations are high, with all-league status a very attainable goal.
FB Charles Jageler, Eastern HS, is back for his 2nd season. His rookie year was cut short due to injury so 2010 will be a real opportunity to make the most of his talents.
Check back Monday for announcements on several key returning vets as well as 3 new players who should provide an instant infusion of talent at some critical positions.

The Kentucky Wolverines started laying the ground work for the 2010 season by naming Greg Nolan as the new head coach of the team. Coach Nolan joined the team as defensive coordinator for the 2008 bowl game in Florida and served in that capacity through the 2009 season.
To elevate an already potent offense to the highest possible level, Coach Nolan has assigned Wolverines all-time leading receiver Shaun Boykins as Offensive Coordinator.
Complete bios for Coaches Nolan and Boykins, as well as the rest of the staff will be coming over the next few weeks.
The rest of the coaching staff will be introduced at our first team meeting. We will be meeting Saturday, January 16th @ 1pm at BJ's Bar & Grill in Bardstown.

Wolverines Fall to Warriors, Face Fire!
Posted: 8/4/2009
The Kentucky Wolverines traveled to Dayton to face the Miami Valley Warriors this past Saturday with a plan in mind. Demonstrate superior talent early, take the lead and win the game. All was going to plan as QB Brian Miller was at the helm of the Wolverine offense. Mixing run, pass and option plays Miller showed his versatility as he led the Wolverines to leads of 10 points twice in the game.
The Wolverine defense was not to be undone as LB Wade Thurman returned a deflected pass for his first touchdown of the season. In addition to the big play, the defense had been mostly solid all night long in shutting down the Warriors bread and butter running game.
The fourth quarter saw a dramatic change in the game. Leading 24-14, the Wolverines were flooded with a down pour of yellow flags and questionable calls. A beautiful 70 yard kick return deep into Warrior territory by Marcus Commodore was called back on a mysterious holding call. Multiple Wolverine drives stalled after a bevy of delay of game calls. The extra momentum and improved field position gave the Warriors the opportunity they needed to climb back into the game. One long touchdown pass narrowed the lead to 24-20.
The Warriors began the game winning drive in their own territory but were able to use the run game to march down the field, predominantly behind their monster right side. Aided by a questionable face mask penalty, they moved into the red zone and finally plunged in from 2 yards out with 34 seconds left in the game.
The Wolverines had one last attempt to re-take the lead after taking the kickoff back to the 25. Miller set up in the pocket and fired at a streaking WR Anthony Burnes behind the Warrior defense. The Warrior defenders closed quickly on Burnes tackling him just before the ball arrived. The Wolverine offense rushed up the field thinking the flag on the ground meant 1st and 10 at the Warrior 25 only to be deflated when the referee called the play as offensive pass interference.
The Wolverines face the division leading Mt. Carmel Fire in what is now a must win game for the Wolverines to make the playoffs. Even with the win, the Wolverines will need either the Grand Rapids Thunder, North West Ohio Knights or Columbus War Eagles to lose this upcoming weekend.
Keep your fingers crossed!

Wolverines clip War Eagles' Wings

Cecilia, Ky
Wolverines triumph 28-18.
The Wolverines came in to Saturday's game knowing that it was a must win situation to maintain hopes for a playoff berth. The added pressure appeared to focus the Wolverine defensive unit who sent the War Eagle offense to the sideline after 3 plays. The War Eagles, hoping to catch the punt return unit off guard, attempted a fake punt but came up several yards short.
With momentum and outstanding field position, QB Kendrick Johnson went deep for a quick strike down the sideline to a wide receiver streaking to the endzone. The War Eagle cornerback closed incredibly quickly and snatched the ball out of the air at the 1 yard line, squashing Wolverine hopes of an early lead.
On the next possession, Johnson found WR Anthony Burnes (EKU) for his first touchdown pass of the game. Burnes has become the latest in a long line of standout Wolverine receivers. Beginning with Joey Stockton (WKU / North Hardin), Brett Sheckles (Bardstown), Shaun Boykins (Murray St), and AJ French (Elizabethtown).
The War Eagles shortened the field on the ensuing kickoff and a face mask penalty. Starting in Wolverine territory, the War Eagles tied the score at 6-6 with one of the top plays of the night. Setting up in the redzone, they ran a fade that went through the hands of a Wolverine defender before being caught for the score.
Johnson was able to complete his second touchdown pass of the game in the second quarter. Johnson found Boykins across the middle with under 2 minutes left in the half to re-take the lead 12-6. Boykins caught the ball in traffic and held on despite being sandwiched between two War Eagle defenders.
The 2-pt conversion attempt was no good. 12-6 Wolverines at half.
The second half looked to have the potential of turning into a rout but the Wolverines never could put the game away. QB Brian Miller took control of the offense and was responsible for several big plays. Using both his arm and feet he guided the Wolverines to 3 scoring drives, 2 for touchdowns and one for the nail in the coffin field goal by Tyler Enlow.
RB Montez Graves continued his personal scoring streak with an 8 yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter.
The Wolverines host the Tri-State (Cincinnati, OH) Sharks next week.
This is another must win game to make the playoffs.

Wolverines win 21-16, begin playoff push
Posted: 7/13/2009
Newport, Ky
The Kentucky Wolverines knew coming in to their second meeting with the Ky / Oh Xtreme there would be little room for error the remainder of the season. Even as the players walked to locker rooms Xtreme players were talking themselves up, boosted by confidence from an opening game upset of the Wolverines that no one saw coming.
The Xtreme's confidence grew on the first drive. They deviated from their standard spread offense, going to a rushing attack that caught the Wolverine defense off guard. The Xtreme drove the length of the field and scored the games opening touchdown before adjustments were made.
The Wolverine offense, finally beginning to show signs of life, were able to answer right back. QB Kendrick Johnson found WR Anthony Burnes for the first of three touchdown passes on the game.
The Wolverine defense made the necessary adjustments and dominated the rest of the game. OLB Tyjaun Jones continued his dynamic play with two big hits, the first on a crossing route to the tight end and the second on the Xtreme quarterback. Jones blitzed off the corner and absolutely exploded into the helpless Antonio Early as he was attempting to throw. The pass fluttered through the air as Early crumpled to the ground. MLB Craig Murphy was the recipient of a gift interception and rumbled 15 yards on the return.
The Wolverine offense was paced by possibly the most talented receiving corps in team history. In addition to Burnes' touchdown, AJ French and Antoine Sain both converted Johnson passes into points. On the ground, RB Montez Graves continues to establish himself as a star in the making. Graves used his explosive speed to exploit an Xtreme defense that had no choice but to sell out on a pass rush the majority of the time. Once past the line of scrimmage, Graves was able to churn out yards for the second week in a row.
The Wolverine defense was spotless after the opening drive. OLB Thurman Wade notched another sack, while DT Eric Cecil applied continuous pressure in the pocket. SS Martel Dunn contributed several tackles and had a pass break up. Brian Miller helped solidify the Wolverine secondary. At 6'1 and possibly the fastest player on the team, Miller has the ability to shut down virtually any receiver.
With the win, playoff aspirations live on another week.
The Wolverines face off against the Columbus War Eagles (5-1) July 18th.
The game will be held at West Hardin Middle School. Kick off is at 5 pm.
USFA 2nd half begins
Posted: 7/8/2009
The Wolverines kick off the second half of the USFA season 7/11 against the KY /OH Xtreme.
The Wolverines find themselves in an unusual situation, with their backs to walls and fighting for a playoff spot. Being 2 games behind the division leading Mt. Carmel Fire, it appears as if the Wolverines will have to win the final 5 games to have a shot at a division crown.
The Wild Card options are too tricky to call at this point. There are 3 wild cards in the West but with a half a season still left to play there is no accurate way to predict who will have what record. It does appear that the Metro Detroit Wolverines and North West Ohio Knighs have the inside track on two of the wild card berths leaving a host of teams fighing for the last spot.
The 4th of July break looks to have recharged the Wolverine coaching staff. Look for things to flow a lot smoother in the upcoming weeks.
Practice this Thursday should be a good indicator of things to come.
Wolverines Scorched by Fire
Posted: 6/29/2009
Andersen, Ohio
The Wolverines came into their Week 5 contest with the Mt. Carmel Fire with an opportunity to gain a share of 1st place in the South division but left the field with the emptiness of letting another game slip through their fingers.
The teams battled to a 14 point stalemate in the first half with the Wolverine scores both coming on big plays. Rookie RB Montez Graves (Kentucky State) demonstrated an amazing burst for a 70+ yard rushing score off the left side. With a little help from the offensive line, Graves could develop into a consistent play maker.
The return of DE Ray Huff (Kentucky State) has breathed new life into the Wolverine defense. Ray has provided the bulk of the pass rush and has forced multiple turnovers. This week Ray forced 1 fumble, which he also recovered, and recovered a second that he returned for a touchdown.
The offense continued its season long struggles. Dropped passed, interceptions, fumbles all contributed to a host of stalled drives. There were a few brights spots however. Down 28-14 late in the 4th quarter, the Wolverine offense was able to put a score on the board to close the game 28-21, putting the pressure on the defense. The Fire attempted a play action pass to convert a first down and run out the clock, but the ball was intercepted and returned for the tying score.
The pendelum of momentum continued to swing however. The Fire returned a short kick to near midfield and took advantage of a long pass down the seam right through the Wolverine secondary for the winning score.
The Kendrick Johnson led offense had 45 seconds, but no timeouts, to mount a drive. Johnson hit WR Shaun Boykins (Murray State) on tow sideline routes to get the ball to the Fire 29 with 11 seconds remaining. Johnson found his go to WR AJ French streaking down the sideline for the apparent TD but French lost control of the ball when he hit the ground following an acrobatic catch. 5 seconds left to go.....Johnson dropped back and deftly avoided the oncoming rush and delivered a strike to rookie sensation WR Anthony Burnes at the 2 yard line. As the ball was coming into his hands, Burnes stole a quick look to see where the Fire defenders were attacking from but as he did the ball went through his grasp and time expired.
Fire win a nail biter of a game 35-28.

Wolverines feel heat and Fire at halfway point

The Kentucky Wolverines travel to Cincinnati to face the Mount Carmel Fire.
This is the proverbial fork in the road for the Wolverines. With the win, the Wolverines will have at least a share of the division lead and control their own destiny as far as getting into the playoffs.
Lose and the Wolverines will be 2 games back of the upstart Fire, who would also have the head to head tie breaker advantage, with only 5 games to play.
Week 5 will be a test of pride and determination for the Wolverines.
Saturday night will determine if the Wolverines will be a contender in the 2009 playoffs or just another pretender.
Wolverines lose 2004 Championship Rematch
Posted: 6/22/2009
Glasgow, Ky
There was a lot of hype leading up to the Wolverine - Warrior rematch of the 2004 league championship game. The game was tight but far from sharp or approaching the same level of execution of the original contest.
The Warriors made the long trip to Glasgow, so conventional wisdom would have thought the Wolverines would have the advantage in the early going. So much for conventional wisdom. The Warriors received the opening kick and immediately marched down the field for the first score of the game, with QB Runion finding WR Bobby Huttis on his 1st of 4....yes 4 touchdown receptions.
The Wolverine offense continued it's season long abomination. The once mighty Wolverine attack has fallen on hard times in 2009 despite a wealth of talent at the skill positions.
The Warriors second possession also ended in a touchdown, but this time for the Wolverines as FS Michael Skees picked off a Runion pass and returned it for the score.
The teams traded possessions for most of the second quarter with the Wolverines having the field position advantage. Twice the Warrior defense came up with big stops in the red zone, one being a blocked field goal attempt that would have given the Wolverines their first lead of the game.
The Warriors were able to close out the first half scoring with their last drive. On 3rd down, LB Ray Huff made and outstanding move at the line of scrimmage and tracked down Bobby Huttis, subbing for an injured Runion, for the sack. Huff had one hand on the back of Huttis's shoulder pads however and was called for a personal foul resulting in an automatic first down for the Warriors. With a new set of downs and a lift from the return of Runion, the Warriors took the lead with another Runion-Huttis strike.
The second half was more of the same from an offensive point of view. Drives ending in punts were the highlight as the turnover bug continues to rear its ugly head for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines defense got on the board again early in the 3rd quarter. The Warriors were starting a drive backed up in their own territory and forced to pass. As Runion dropped back, Huff again got pressure forcing Runion into his own endzone and a host of Wolverines. The safety narrowed the Warrior lead to 14-9.
The Warriors quelled that momentum with 2 more Runion to Huttis strikes, extending the lead to 28-9.
The Wolverine Special Teams units have been consistent contributors this season, and they performed their magic in the 4th quarter. The Warriors were attempting to punt with nearly 2 minutes left in the game when a low snap gave SS Alvin Pate a chance to hit the punter and force a fumble. Pate returned for an apparent score but was ruled down at the 1 yard line. Given the performace of the Warrior defense to this point in the game, this was no gimmee touchdown. In an attempt to maintain a defensive shutout, the Warriors held strong on 4 straight plays keeping the Wolverines out of the endzone but a rouging the passer penalty gave the offense a second chance and finally they were able to punch it in for the final score. The two point conversion was unsuccessful.
Wolverines fall to the Warriors, 28-15

Wolverines Triumph 35-14
Posted: 6/14/2009
Cincinnati, Ohio
The Wolverines traveled to Ohio for the second week in a row, this time to face the Tri-State Sharks. The game followed the expected script in the 1st quarter. The Sharks received the opening kick and came out throwing on offense. Using 4 wide receivers on nearly every play, the Sharks were able to convert 2 first downs and move into Wolverine territory. Throwing on every snap is not without risk however, and the odds caught up with the Sharks. Safety Alvin Pate (Eastern Kentucky) jumped in front of a Shark pass and returned it 45 yards to set up the offense for the first score of the game.
Playing with the short field made it only a matter of time before the Kendrick Johnson led offense got on the board. The Wolverines drove to the Shark 1 yard line using a mix of quick passes to WR Marcus Commodore (Henry Clay HS) and runs by RB Mike Woolfork (Campbellsville). QB Johnson called his own number on a QB sneak to punch it into the endzone.
The Wolverine defense held strong on the Sharks second possession forcing the punt. The offense fed off the momentum that was building, using a methodical drive that carried over into the second quarter to extend the lead to 14 with a 6 yard TD run by Woolfork.
The Woolfork score was about the only thing to go right for the Wolverines in the 2nd quarter. The Sharks had a big return on the ensuing kickoff then continued to throw the ball but with success this series. Aided by a questionable pass intereference penalty, the Sharks got on the board with a short draw play up the middle.
The Wolverine offense began to sputter on the next drive. The Wolverines ran off tackle on 1st down but the Sharks read the play well and stopped it for a 2 yard loss. Forced to pass on 2nd down, the Sharks stepped in front of QB Brian Miller's pass over the middle and returned 23 yards into Wolverine territory.
With the quick change of possession and great field position, the Sharks found new life. Using a series of quick passes, draws and screens, the Sharks were able to get into the endzone a second time tying the game at 14.
In a game that should not have been close, the Wolverines found themselves deadlocked at the half. The coaching staff had 15 minutes to adjust to the Shark passing attach and re-start the offense.
With the troops rallied, the second half opened in the best way possible....with the ball in the hands of the incredibly elusive Marcus Commodore. Commodore took the opening kick off 85 yards up the Wolverine sideline for the score and a 21-14 lead.
The Wolverine defense turned up the pressure in the second half. Down only one score, the Sharks were determined to counter. A short kick resulted in great field position for the Sharks. Sensing an opportunity to re-tie the game the Sharks went deep down the middle of the field. That was a mistake as Alvin Pate snatched his 2nd interception of the game and burst up the sideline for 76 yard TD return to make it a two score game.
The game was far from over however. The Sharks had plenty of time and a quick strike offense, as they demonstrated in the 2nd quarter. On their opening drive of the 4th quarter, the Sharks drove into the red zone with an opportunity to cut the lead in half. They went to the draw play that had served them so well in the first half but the defensive line surged through the gaps and forced a fumble.
The Wolverine offense was unable to capitalize and Sharks got another opportunity just 2 minutes of game time later. Trying for the endzone over the middle of the field resulted in another turnover. CB Chris Coleman (Kentucky State) safely brought in a tipped pass for his 1st interception of the year.
The Sharks defense could hold up no longer. With an opportunity to put the game out of reach, the Wolverine offense marched down the field. WR AJ French (Elizabethtown HS) closed out the scoring with a quick screen and run for a 28 yard TD.
The Sharks last possession ended as so many of the game had, with a turnover. Alvin Pate recorded his 3rd interception of the game and casually strolled out of bounds to let the offense close out the game.
The Wolverines racked up 70 more rushing yards trying to run out the clock. RB Marvin Swope (Kentucky Weslyan) made his 2009 debut and ripped off two runs for a total 54 yards, finally tackled at the Sharks 1 (he was really in ) before the Wolverine offense took a knee as time expired.

Official 2009 Roster
Wolfpack Tamed
Posted: 6/7/2009
Centerville, Ohio
The Wolverines travelled to Centerville,Ohio in week 2 of the USFA schedule to face the expansion Southern Ohio Wolfpack. The Wolverines were very ready to make up for the week 1 debacle that resulted in a loss to the Xtreme. Amends were made from the opening kickoff. WR Marcus Commodore, who led the MCFL in all purpose yards in 2008, received the ball at the Wolverine 22 and scampered through the Wolfpack for a 78 yard score.
The Wolverine defense shut down the Wolfpack on their opening drive, giving Skees a second opportunity to steal the spotlight. Fielding the punt at the Wolverine 35, WR and Returner extraordinairre, Michael Skees used a series of bone crushing blocks to get free before weaving through the 4 defenders left standing on the play. 3 minutes into the game, the Special Teams units generated two touchdowns and a 14 pt lead.
The Wolverine offense put the game far out of reach with receiving touchdowns by WRs AJ French and Anthony Burnes, and rushing touchdowns by Mike Woolfork and Michael Skees.
The defense stood their ground and held on to for their first shut out of the season. DE Shaun Boykins got his first sack of the season while CB Jason Breckenridge added his second interception. SS Alvin Pate continues to build his reputation as a fierce hitter, seperating several Wolfpack WR's from the ball and occasionally their senses.

Xtreme Makeover upsets Wolverines
Posted: 6/2/2009
The Wolverines opened the 2009 USFA season as the heavy favorites against a familiar foe, the Ky / Oh Xtreme. The Xtreme traveled to Lincoln County HS with a new found confidence based on the addition of new head coach Tony Bray and a 21-0 pre-season victory over the Kentucky Stallions.
The Xtreme jumped on the Wolverines from the very beginning. K Tyler Enlow squibbed the opening kick off and the coverage team did nothing to bail him out, allowing the Xtreme to return inside the Wolverine 10. The Xtreme punched it in for a TD and the early lead.
The Wolverine offense continued its struggles of the 2009 season, yielding two turnovers in the 1st half. The quick changes in field position allowed the Xtreme to extend their lead to 20-10 at the half.
The second half opened with the Wolverines getting the ball and chance to jump right back in to the game. The window of opportunity closed quickly as the drive stalled near mid-field. The Xtreme took advantage of the let down and mounted another scoring drive, making it 27-10.
The outcome looked bleak, but a quick strike of 60+ yards from QB Brian Miller to WR Anthony Burnes narrowed the gap and got the crowd back into the game. The 2pt conversion made it 27-18.
After trading possessions, the score remained 27-18 and the defense needed a stop to give the offense a chance to make it a one possession game. The Xtreme were held to 3rd and long in Wolverine territory. Instead of risking the turnover, the Xtreme went the safe route, running the ball to keep the clock moving. The RB was hit in the backfield by a blitzing cornerback but shrugged off the tackle attempt and scampering for the first down. The drive ended with a TD and the final score, 34-18
Congrats to the Xtreme.

Cyclones Blow Through Hardin County
Posted: 5/17/2009
Vine Grove, Kentucky
The NEMO Cyclones (St. Louis) made the long trip to Vine Grove for the Wolverines' opening game of the 2009 season and lived up to their reputation. In a game of two highly ranked organizations it was clear from the beginning which team has begun to remove the long off season rust.
The Cyclones received the opening kick off and mounted an early drive. After two first downs the Wolverine defense held strong and forced a punt.
The first big play of the game came on the Wolverines first offensive snap. Rookie (Campbellsville) running back Mike Woolfork took the pitch off the right end but had the ball stripped while fighting for the extra yard. Cyclones recovered.
After trading punts, the Wolverine defense injected some life into the team. CB Jason Breckenrigde picked off the Cyclone quarterback in the flats in a play that could have swung the momentum.
The Cyclone defense stepped up to the challenge almost immediately, picking off Wolverine QB Kendrick Johnson and changing field position with a 35 yard return.
The Cyclones got on the board in the first half on a pass that to WR #84 took through the center of the defense and then down the sideline for the score. The extra point was no good
Cyclone 6-0 at the half.
The second half resulted in nothing but more futility for the Wolverine offense. Failure to move the ball or sustain a drive put the defense in an unenviable position. Time of possession began to take it's toll in the 4th quarter as the Cyclones were able to get their ground game on track.
The Cyclones tacked on 2 second half touchdowns to extend their lead to 19-0. The Wolverine offense never did get rolling, suffering the first shut out in team history.
There were a few brights spots to come from the pre-season loss.
LB's Wade Thurman and Craig Murphy made their 2009 debut and look to regain their all league form.
WR Shaun Boykins looked to be in mid-season form maneuvering through the Cyclone defense on 2 of his catches
RB Montez Graves showed excellent burst with the ball and has the opportunity to be a play maker in 2009

2008 Final Rankings

The 2008 Wolverine Football Season has come to a close. Despite a disappointing record (12 wins -4 losses) by Wolverine standards, the team was still recognized as one of the premiere organizations in the country. The National Football Events poll placed the Kentucky Wolverines in the #19 slot nationally and #4 in the Central Region. While we appreciate the recognition, we also realize it is our mission to improve in 2009.
Training Camp can't come soon enough!

N'oreaster triumph over Wolverines
Posted: 1/17/2009
Deland, Florida
The Wolverines came to Florida with high expectations. The Lowell Nor'easter rained on that parade. The Nor'easter came out firing on all cylinders, hitting two long passes for td's to jump to an early 13-0 lead.
The Wolverine offense, led by Qb Tony Blocker, were rusty from the long layoff. After several scoreless drives, things got on track with emergence of Marcus Commodore. Commodore had 3 catches in a drive he capped with an 8 yard touchdown run off the block of OT Rodrick Tinker.
The Wolverines drew closer with 45 yard field goal from K Casey Clark in the second quarter and took the lead on 7 yard pass from Blocker to WR Antonio Dilworth.
With the defense settled down from the early aerial assaul, the game looked to be in hand. At the 6 minute mark of the 4th quarter the Nor'easter offense took the field in a final attempt to retake the lead. After 2 stops, it was 3rd and 8 and appeared to be the final nail in the coffin. The N'oreaster QB dropped back to pass and unleashed a long spiral for a streaking wide receiver. SS Ray Childs appeared to have good inside position to make a play on the ball but was called for pass intereference.
With renewed life, the N'oreaster were able to punch in to the end zone to cap off scoring and enjoy a 20-16 victory.
RB Moonie Cunningham was recognized at team MVP in addition to the outstanding performance by WR Marcus Commodore.
