More Wolverines Ink Contracts

The Wolverine roster continues to add talent and new blood to an already impressive array of talent.

This week's additions:

Chris Coleman, CB (Kentucky State) - Chris is a returning starter from 2009 and will be in a position battle with with several new comers looking unseat the wily veteran.

Mike Woolfork, RB / WR (Campbellsville) Mike is one of the top athletes on the team, with an unusual combination of speed and size. His versatility could land him in almost any position on the team. RB, WR, TE, or even Safety or OLB, Mike has the ability to play any or all of the above.

Brian Green, QB (Watertown Red & Black) Brian practiced a few times with the team last season but moved to the area after the deadline to add new players. He demonstrated excellent arm strength in his limited audition and big things are expected of him this upcoming season. In a testament to his athletic ability, Brian played safety for his former team (Watertown) in the National Football Events bowl game last month.

From Semi-pro to the Superbowl

This a great story about a semi pro player from Pittsburgh who eventually caught on in the NFL. This is the 3rd player i've heard of just this year who has used minor league football as a springboard to bigger and better things.

Here is an excerpt. Click on the text for the full story...

That Darnell Dinkins will play in Super Bowl XLIV is an inspirational tale of faith and perseverance. Nine years ago, Dinkins was playing quarterback for the semi-pro Pittsburgh Colts. Now, he will play tight end against the Indianapolis Colts on Feb. 7 at Sun Life Stadium in South Florida.

"It's just amazing, when I reflect on all the sacrifices I had to go through on this journey, now, to play in the biggest game in sports, is just surreal," said Dinkins, 32, an eighth-year veteran. "I drop to my knees every morning and pray to God and thank him for this opportunity. How many times can a guy go from semi-pro to the Super Bowl? It's almost unheard of."

It's the stuff of legends. Johnny Unitas did it, but that was more than a half-century ago. That's why Dinkins counts his blessings. He escaped the Hill's Elmore Square housing project at a time when gangs were running the neighborhood. He was a star quarterback at Schenley, but never could crack the lineup under Johnny Majors or Walt Harris at Pitt. Dinkins switched to safety, but lost his starting job to Ramon Walker as a senior.

That didn't deter Dinkins' dream of playing in the NFL.

"He stayed focused. He kept his foot in the door and worked to provide for his family," said his mother, Wendy Dinkins, who now lives in the Stanton Heights home the son she still calls "D.J." bought her three years ago. "I'm so proud of him — it's making me cry — because he never gave up."

Wolverines building momentum

The Wolverine season is beginning to take shape. The Wolverine Charity classic will have a rare double dip in 2010, partnering with both Big Brothers Big Sisters and Feeding America's BackPack Program. More details to follow.

The Wolverines will also be participating in the BBBS Bowl for Kids Sake on Sunday, March 7th at 3 pm. If you would like to bowl with the Wolverines and raise money for a great cause, please use the Contact Us link to let me know.

DT AJ Lewis from Bardstown HS has officially been re-signed for the 2010 season. This will be AJ's 3rd year with the team. Expectations are high, with all-league status a very attainable goal.

FB Charles Jageler, Eastern HS,  is back for his 2nd season. His rookie year was cut short due to injury so 2010 will be a real opportunity to make the most of his talents.

Check back Monday for announcements on several key returning vets as well as 3 new players who should provide an instant infusion of talent at some critical positions.
